Inside the World of Microchips

What’s happening in the chip industry - and could open source turn it upside down?

Microchips are at the center of AI, trade wars and trillion-dollar investments. But something is happening beyond the industry giants: open source is enabling small teams and startups to develop their own microchip prototypes at costs that were once out of reach.

In this TechTalk, chip designer Jørgen Kragh Jakobsen takes us inside the chip industry. How does it work? What is changing? And what does it take to turn an idea into a physical chip?

Through practical demonstrations, Jørgen shows what is possible with open-source chip design. Using a VR headset, he takes us inside a microchip, right down to its transistors. We will explore chip designs and what it takes to build a first prototype, including the skills, costs and practical limitations involved.

Along the way, he shares the story of Merus Audio - from a three-person team at DTU to 10 million chips produced, including chips that help Soundboks deliver their powerful sound.

Who is it for?

Anyone developing hardware, building a startup or curious about the technology and industry behind microchips. No experience in chip design is needed.

About Jørgen

Jørgen Kragh Jakobsen has more than 25 years of experience developing microchips, including roles at Oticon, Merus Audio and Infineon. Today, he runs IC Works, specialising in open-source chip design.
