What if AI wasn't just a productivity tool?

What if you could use it to tinker, build and explore how technology can preserve culture?

In our first AI & Budaya conversation, we asked where Malay/Muslims draw the line when it comes to using AI for culture. This time, we're moving from discussion to experimentation.

Come with an idea, an existing project or just curiosity. We'll share some examples to get you started, then give you space to experiment with Codex and build something around culture.

Food, language, music, art, games, traditions, stories. What you build is up to you.

Never tried Codex? That's okay. There'll be practitioners around to help as you tinker. If you'd rather learn and observe first, that's okay too.

And as we build, we'll keep asking:

  • What should AI help us preserve?

  • How do we experiment responsibly?

  • Who owns what we create with AI?

  • What happens when AI uses someone else's work?

At the end, we'll ask: having actually tried the tools, where do you stand now?

This isn't about convincing you to use AI. It's about trying it for yourself and deciding what you think.

Not Malay/Muslim? You're welcome too. This session is grounded in Malay/Muslim perspectives and culture, but if you work with, design for or are simply curious about the community, come build alongside us.

What to Expect

Get started with Codex

Son Le, Ambassador of Codex & AI Tinkerers, will introduce Codex and get you set up to start building.

Get some inspiration

Shariff Rafi, Chief Herder at Herding Codes, will share from his own experiments and other projects he's encountered to spark ideas for what you might build.

Tinker and build

You'll have time to work on your idea, with AI practitioners around to help you get unstuck along the way.

Share and reflect

We'll showcase a few things built in the room, then revisit where we stand after actually trying the tools.

Important Notes

  • Bring a laptop with internet access.

  • All experience levels are welcome. Come curious, critical or sceptical.

  • You don't need to have attended the first AI & Budaya session.

  • New to Codex? We'll share setup instructions before the session, and you can come early if you need help getting set up.

More About the Organizer

Lepak Conversations curates inclusive and thought-provoking conversations so we can view Malay/Muslim issues from a collective lens, where the focus is on you and I together, instead of you versus me.

More About the Series

Gotong Royong is a traditional Malay concept whereby people living in a kampong (village) do things together and help each other in the spirit of goodwill and reciprocity.

This series brings that spirit to Lorong AI as we create regular opportunities for the Lorong AI community to tackle challenges collectively. When we learn, troubleshoot and build together, everyone progresses faster.
