The AI Collective Chicago Chapter and the Chicago Java Users Group (CJUG) are jointly hosting this meetup.
ABSTRACT:
Developers are using GitHub Copilot for much more than autocomplete. In this session, we will look at practical ways GitHub Copilot can help with day-to-day development, legacy application modernization, and building new AI-powered developer experiences.
We will start with GitHub Copilot App Modernization and how it can help development teams upgrade older applications, including dependency updates, build fixes, tests, security fixes, and containerization. (We will look at upgrading Java 8 and Spring applications for Java teams, as well as for teams that work with Python, .Net, or Node.js/Typescript.) We’ll also look at how GitHub Copilot works inside IntelliJ IDEA, with practical tips for getting better results without wasting time or burning through unnecessary AI usage.
From there, we will explore what’s coming next, including Microsoft’s new frontier AI models such as MAI-Code-1-Flash, and how more efficient coding models may change the way developers use AI in their daily workflow. We will also introduce the GitHub Copilot SDK for Java, Python, .Net, and Node.js/Typescript, and show how developers can start thinking beyond "using GitHub Copilot" and toward building their own GitHub Copilot-powered tools and experiences.
This is a practical session for all developers who want to understand where GitHub Copilot helps today, where it is headed, and how to get more value from it in real projects.
